However, consecutive devastating injuries sidelined her for nearly two seasons: a tibial plateau fracture in her sophomore year and a torn ACL in her junior year.
Despite an impressive return in the 2023-24 season, UConn fell short against Iowa in the Final Four. But this year proved different. With the support of a sports psychologist and her legendary coach Geno Auriemma, Bueckers learned to manage pressure, focusing on each moment rather than the ultimate outcome.
“I was so afraid of failing that I couldn’t play well,” Bueckers admitted. “But now, I understand that everything happens for a reason.”
UConn’s Resurgence
This season, UConn finally boasted a fully healthy roster for the first time in years. Azzi Fudd, a fellow star who had battled persistent injuries, enjoyed her most complete season. Freshman sensation Sarah Strong exceeded all expectations, becoming a crucial pillar for the team.
Following a surprising loss to Tennessee in February, UConn experienced a turning point, emphatically “destroying” South Carolina by 29 points just ten days later. Auriemma observed, “They love each other, they love the process of training, and that’s why we are successful.”
