TAMPA, FLA. – Following their stinging defeat in the 2022 NCAA Championship game against South Carolina, UConn legends Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, and Breanna Stewart offered words of comfort to a dejected Paige Bueckers and her teammates. That loss marked UConn’s first in a national title game after 11 previous victories. Their message to Bueckers resonated: “Championships are never won without hardship.”
And finally, after five tumultuous years, Bueckers realized her dream. In the 2025 NCAA Championship game, she contributed 17 points and 6 rebounds, leading UConn to a decisive 82-59 victory over South Carolina. This triumph ended a nine-year championship drought for the Huskies and provided Bueckers with the perfect ending to her decorated college career.

A Difficult Road to Glory Paige Bueckers burst onto the NCAA women’s basketball scene as a phenomenon in her freshman year, earning the National Player of the Year award in 2021. However, consecutive devastating injuries sidelined her for nearly two seasons: a tibial plateau fracture in her sophomore year and a torn ACL in her junior year.

Despite an impressive return in the 2023-24 season, UConn fell short against Iowa in the Final Four. But this year proved different. With the support of a sports psychologist and her legendary coach Geno Auriemma, Bueckers learned to manage pressure, focusing on each moment rather than the ultimate outcome.

“I was so afraid of failing that I couldn’t play well,” Bueckers admitted. “But now, I understand that everything happens for a reason.”

UConn’s Resurgence

This season, UConn finally boasted a fully healthy roster for the first time in years. Azzi Fudd, a fellow star who had battled persistent injuries, enjoyed her most complete season. Freshman sensation Sarah Strong exceeded all expectations, becoming a crucial pillar for the team.

Following a surprising loss to Tennessee in February, UConn experienced a turning point, emphatically “destroying” South Carolina by 29 points just ten days later. Auriemma observed, “They love each other, they love the process of training, and that’s why we are successful.”

A Victory of Resilience

In the championship game, Bueckers didn’t need to carry the scoring load – Fudd and Strong shone brightly, combining for 48 points. Instead, Bueckers was the undeniable heart and soul, the guiding force that propelled UConn back to the pinnacle. As she exited the court for the final time, Auriemma embraced Bueckers tightly and whispered, “I love you.”

“I haven’t been this emotional in 12 years,” Auriemma confessed. “Paige’s journey is the most extraordinary thing I have ever witnessed.”

The Legacy of a Legend

Diana Taurasi once stated, “No matter how many individual accolades you have, only the NCAA Championship truly matters.” And now, Bueckers has it all.

As she cut down the net amidst the roaring cheers of the fans, she knew she had penned her own fairytale ending. “I wouldn’t trade anything I’ve been through,” Bueckers said. “This is the deserved reward for relentless effort.”

For UConn, this marks their 12th national championship, but for Bueckers, it stands as a powerful testament to a journey of “falling down, getting back up, and shining brightly.”
